Are you in the company of children and seek inspiration and ideas for experiences for the whole family in Horsens? Then, you’ve come to the right place.
In Horsens, you can visit exciting museums, have close encounters with animals, play at a lot of playgrounds, go canoeing and cycle in the open countryside and also dine at child-friendly restaurants.
Find anything from action and speed to learning and immersion
Excitement and fun at the museum
Are you looking for educational and cultural experiences that everyone can enjoy? Then, Horsens has plenty to offer.
At Denmark’s Industrial Museum, you can see, test and touch the past. Experience “the olden days” close up and see what life was like for your parents, grandparents or great-grandparents.
FÆNGSLET, the old Horsens state penitentiary, is still located on a hilltop in the northern part of the city and is today a museum and arts centre. Walk in the footsteps of an inmate and listen to the stories of past inmates and staff.
If you would rather spend time in nature, it is worth your while paying a visit to the Children’s Farm, Børnebondegården, where you can see and talk to guinea pigs, chicken, geese, ducks, goats, sheep, horses and cows. There is plenty of space here for playing on play-cows, in the playhouse, or racing on play tractors, or watch the milking of a cow.
Glud Museum is a living museum where you can experience what life was like in the villages during the past 350 years, and Høgdal is a cultural-historical gem, a farm that has been in the same family for five generations, where time has stood still since work on the farm was stopped in 1927. Both places offer many fine children’s activities.
We also recommend exploring the toy exhibition at Horsens Museum, and mom and dad will enjoy a visit to Horsens Art Museum located in a beautiful park a short distance away for its extensive collection of works by the son of the city, Michael Kvium.
Oh! And did we mention that the whole family can buy a real dinosaur tooth from Fossil jewellery, where a private collector has turned his home into a museum with some of the world’s oldest fossils?

Activities on children’s terms
Pack a picnic and catch a nice nature experience for the whole family at Fyelmose Nature and Fishing Park. With its child-friendly fishing lake, a family lake and a natural lake, there is something for all ages and levels of experience.
There are all types of fishing spots, from the child-friendly lake and shallow waters where you have to wear waders and walk into the reeds, to lakeshores, bluffs and islands from where you fish the deep waters.
If you are more of a splash-and-water-park type? Then try the water slide and climbing wall in the indoor water complex, Aqua Forum, I dare you!

Fuglsang, which is located between Horsens and Silkeborg, lets you experience nature at its most authentic – on the back of an Icelandic pony. Surrounded by the rolling forests of the hilly countryside, you will enjoy a nice, guided horseback ride on a real Icelandic pony. The only thing that takes away from your field of view is a pair of straggly ears.
If you are more of a competitive type, you can play a game of Medieval crazy golf at Husodde Strand Camping. In the middle of the 12-hole crazy golf course, there is a big castle and, if you are not careful, you end up in the witch’s pot or be put in the pillory.
The play room in the shopping centre, bytorvHorsens, is an ideal place to combine the shopping trip with playtime for the youngest family members. The same can be said for Bakkelandets Legetøj in Brædstrup.
Here are playgrounds and bouncy cushions
When children are happy, the parents are happy, and all have had a successful day trip or short break.
In Horsens, playgrounds are always an option and there are plenty of them.
If you are looking for overnight accommodation in Horsens with direct access to a playground, we recommend Scandic Bygholm Park where the playground guarantees lots of fun and which is near the city’s shopping area and restaurants. There is also a zip line and disc golf course.
Campsites like Gudenå Camping and Elite Camp Vestbirk also offer playgrounds.
The same is true for Hotel Pejsegården in Brædstrup.
If you prefer indoor play, there are bouncy castles and hours of fun waiting for you in Horsens Legeland.
Nature experiences: Fresh air and sensational experiences
The Uncovered Bridge is unique because it was hidden in a dam for 85 years. In 2014, the bridge was uncovered and restored to its former splendour and, today, the bridge is a magnificent sight for the whole family and an even better experience to cross.
Take a leisurely walk surrounded by beautiful scenery on the Planet Path where you can get a feeling of the huge size of space. A nice canoe trip is also a great way to experience the beautiful landscape. The stretch passing Voervadsbro and Klostermølle is the most beautiful part of the river Gudenåen.

The Skatepark in the Horsens Town Hall Square is a concrete park and skater park with plenty of opportunities for children and youth who like to skateboard, roller-skate, ride their BMX, trial bikes and scooters. In the winter, the skating rink is a big crowd puller.
The slightly older children may enjoy participating in orienteering.
The bicycle ferry provides you with the opportunity of experiencing nature close-up. So, go island hopping and experience the special island atmosphere of Endelave or Alrø where it seems as if time has stopped.
Or visit one of the other islands in Horsens Fjord.
Child-friendly eateries and ice-cream kiosks
When the whole family wants to eat out, the menu does not always have to be French fries and nuggets. Horsens is home to several child-friendly restaurants with baby chairs, smiling staff and food and drink that cater to both young ones and adults.
Whatever you decide to go for, you can almost always find an ice-cream nearby.
